TRI-CITY STORM @ YOUNGSTOWN PHANTOMSCOVELLI CENTRE, YOUNGSTOWN, OHIOSATURDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2009 - 7:15 PMGAME PREVIEWThe Youngstown Phantoms hope their special-edition Relay For Life Night jerseys will change their home-ice luck tonight, as they host the West Division’s Tri-City Storm for the second time in 24 hours. The Storm pulled out a 5-3 come-from-behind victory last night on the strength of a three-goal third period, dropping the Phantoms to 0-2-0 at the Covelli Centre.
Last night, Youngstown (2-3-1=5 pts; 5th in East) gave up the first goal of the game for the second-straight contest, but nonetheless managed to build a 3-2 lead through two periods. First-year Phantoms defenseman Luke Eibler drilled home his first and second career USHL goals, both on the power play, and rookie forward Rich Young flipped in a rebound from in tight for his first-ever point at the Tier I level.
Three players enjoyed multi-point games last night for Tri-City (4-1-1=9 pts; 3rd in West), including a three-assist performance from big gun Jaden Schwartz, who now has a team-leading nine points on the young season. Brett Moehler (first two goals of the year, plus an assist) and Maxwell Tardy (goal and assist) also contributed greatly to the Storm cause. Carsen Chubak made a mere 16 saves, but it was enough for his fourth win in six starts between the pipes.
PHANTOM PHACTS· Special teams continue to be a double-edged sword for Youngstown. The Phantoms added two more power-play goals to the hopper last night, improving the man-advantage unit to fifth-best in the USHL, but the 13th-ranked penalty-killing unit was burned for three scores against in eight shorthanded situations.
· When Rich Young’s first-period goal went in the Tri-City net, that meant every first-year Phantoms forward except one has tallied in the first six games of the campaign. The only man left out is Cody Strang, who missed two games with the flu.
· Youngstown was outshot last night 27-19, marking the fourth-consecutive game in which they came up on the short end of that category. The only time the Phantoms have won the SOG battle was Oct. 10 in Des Moines, as they rung up a 42-29 advantage en route to a 5-3 win.
STORM CHASING· Friday’s win over the Phantoms was a breakout night for several members of the Storm. Much like Youngstown with Eibler and Young, Tri-City had one player (Brett Moehler) pick up his first two goals of the season and another skater (Cody Murphy) earn his first.
· After a three-goal man-advantage explosion, the Storm’s power play is now clicking at nearly a 25 percent pace. Only the Fargo Force, who have cashed in on nearly a third of their chances thus far, is outpacing the Tri-City unit.
· Whichever side loses tonight’s game will have to wait awhile for a shot at revenge. Four-and-a-half months separate this meeting between the Storm and Phantoms and the next one, which occurs Friday, March 5 in Kearney, Nebraska.
