YOUNGSTOWN, OH (Monday, June 1st, 2009) – With the United States Hockey League’s roster “dead period” following the May 13th Entry Draft passed, the Youngstown Phantoms made two moves to improve their roster over the weekend.
Friday, the Phantoms acquired forward Brian Dowd from the Chicago Steel in exchange for a second round draft pick in the 2010 Entry Draft.
Dowd played last season at Niagara University (NCAA Division I - CHA) and recorded six goals and ten assists in 30 college games.
During the 2007-2008 hockey season, he played in the USHL for the Chicago Steel and had a 7-17-24 line with 145 penalty minutes in 48 games.
Dowd (5’11” 185 lbs.) hails from Williamsville, NY, and previously played for the Buffalo Saints AAA program as well as Thayer Academy Prep in Massachusetts. He was originally drafted by the Chicago Steel in the fifth round (52nd overall) in the 2007 USHL Draft.
“We are very happy to have acquired Brian,” says Phantoms’ Director of Player Personnel Jason Koehler. “While a member of the Steel, I had drafted Brian and have a good feel for what he will bring to our club from a veteran experience standpoint in juniors and college hockey as well as his high skill and grit level; he’s a player that the fans will enjoy in Youngstown and I know he’s excited to join us as well.”
In addition to bringing in Dowd, the Phantoms added free agent forward Joe Zarbo to their roster. Zarbo is committed to Clarkson University for 2010.
Zarbo (6'0” 180 lbs.), a Grand Island, NY, native, spent last season with the Tri-City Storm in the USHL and rocked up 17 goals and 10 assists in 57 games.
Prior to playing in the USHL, Zarbo had starred for St. Francis High School in Buffalo, NY, as well as the Boston Jr. Bruins in the Eastern Junior Hockey League.
"Joe provides us another forward with veteran and USHL experience which is important in this league. Last year, in his first USHL season, Joe scored 17 goals and we expect him to increase that number with a year in the league already under his belt and his past track record of being a quality goal scorer for previous teams," said Koehler.
Next week, the Phantoms will open up their main tryout camp, starting with goaltender camp on Monday, June 8th, before the full selection camp begins Wednesday, June 10th.
The Youngstown Phantoms are owned by the B.J. Alan Company - Phantom Fireworks, located in Youngstown, Ohio.
