BENSENVILLE, Ill. (October 11, 2009) – In the birthplace of the deep dish, the Youngstown Phantoms dug deep themselves, striking for three goals in the third period to stun the previously unbeaten Chicago Steel 5-3 at the Edge Ice Arena. Taylor Holstrom, Brett Gensler and Nick Czinder each tallied in the third for the visiting Phantoms (2-1-0), erasing a 3-2 deficit entering the frame. Youngstown completed its first USHL regular season road trip a perfect 2-0 after Saturday night’s 5-4 victory over the Des Moines Buccaneers.
Second-year USHL forward Holstrom triggered the Phantoms’ surge by stealing an attempted breakout pass in front of the Chicago goal and tossing a firm backhand into the top right corner at 10:28 of the third. That tied the game 3-3, but the best was yet to come for the visitors.
Seconds after a power play expired, Gensler turned and threw a forehand toward the goal from the bottom of the left circle. It somehow squirted through goalie Connor Wilson, kicking off a wild celebration among the orange-clad Phantoms with 6:13 to play.
Czinder added an insurance marker 56 seconds later, lasering a wrister over Wilson’s left shoulder to provide the final margin and make a winner out of goalie Jordan Tibbett, who made several above-average stops to keep the Phantoms within range for a comeback win.
The Windy City has been kind to the Phantoms, as they picked up their first preseason win on the Steel’s home rink almost one month ago. Perhaps unfortunately for the Phantoms, they don’t return until Wednesday, Mar. 31 – the season’s final week.
The Steel (3-1-0) came out firing with the help of four first-period power plays, but it was the Phantoms who would jump on top first. With Youngstown enjoying a 5-on-4 advantage, defenseman Scott Mayfield pinched in from the point and rifled a perfect wrister over Wilson’s blocker to make it 1-0 at 13:19. The Phantoms have now scored first in each of their first three USHL games.
Visiting Youngstown doubled its lead early in the middle period on its second power play opportunity, this time getting a goal from Andrew Lamont, his second in two games. Holstrom came out from behind the goal line and was stopped, but the loose puck came to Lamont at the right side of the net at 4:30.
Explosive Chicago, averaging six goals per game, flexed its offensive muscle just 12 seconds after Lamont’s goal, with blueliner Patrick Raley blasting a shot over Tibbett’s glove hand from the right wing to cut the Phantoms lead in half.
Youngstown had killed off the first four Chicago power plays of the afternoon, but the Steel were able to convert the fifth into paydirt courtesy of a Greg Wolfe goal, his fourth, at 6:29 of the second. Alex Krushelnyski set it up with a one-touch pass into the slot for the wide-open Wolfe, who buried the puck into an open net to tie the score.
The Steel onslaught continued at 9:19, with Alex Carpenter tipping Sahir Gill’s drive up under the crossbar from close range to give the home side its first lead of the tilt.
