Phantoms in the Community In their seven years in the Valley, the Youngstown Phantoms have taken the most pride in their deep community roots around the city of Youngstown and its surrounding suburbs. The organization continues striving to build and maintain these community connections through strong relationships with national and local charitable organizations, volunteer efforts at local events and even reaching out to the Valley’s youth through home-grown community-driven projects. The team’s commitment to community starts with their volunteer efforts with local and national charities. During the past year, the Phantoms have volunteered for events held by organizations like the United Way, YMCA and the Poland Rotary. At the same time, the organization hosted events that welcome other charities to the Covelli Centre including nights to benefit the Mario Lemieux Foundation, Toys for Tots, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Relay For Life and Boy Scouts of America. The Phantoms have also gotten active in trying to keep the Valley’s youth active thanks to the “Hockey for Health” program that the team started in 2007. In the program, Phantoms players and coaches visit local schools and use hockey as a way to teach school children the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle. Additionally, the Phantoms also often welcome local schools for children with special needs to join them on the ice to skate with them on off days.
