Youngstown, OH – The Youngstown Phantoms and General Manager Jason Koehler have announced the acquisition of forward Tommy Parrottino and a 4th Round Phase II Draft choice from the Des Moines Buccaneers in exchange for forward Nicolas Werbik.
As the USHL regular season roster deadline approaches on Tuesday October 3rd at 8pm EST and the start of the USHL regular season right around the corner this weekend, the Phantoms made a splash sending their leading scorer from last season to Des Moines in exchange for Parrottino, a former first round USHL pick and the #2 overall draft selection for the Buccaneers in 2016.
“This trade and announcement is exciting for us as we acquire a forward that we feel will be a great addition to our forward group. We were looking for a scoring line LW with junior experience for our team given how heavy we are with right shot forwards, and we found one that should fit right in,” said Koehler. “He has a blend of speed, skill, goal scoring ability, and grit that should complement the group we already have and give our coaching staff another offensive weapon. We were very impressed by Tommy while he played AAA hockey in Detroit, especially two years ago and we’ve kept our eye on him as he has always been someone we felt would be a great addition for us if the option ever presented itself, which now it has. We’ve had some great success in acquiring USHL experienced players from other clubs and then seeing them have a big increase in value here with our coaching staff and environment such as last year with Jake Gingell, Evan Wisocky, and Austin Pooley. Hopefully, Tommy continues that trend for us and our staff has the confidence that it will starting the minute Tommy gets into town.”
Parrottino had a breakout season two years ago at the U18 AAA level with the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies (coached by Phantoms’ Assistant Coach Nick Peruzzi) scoring 25 goals and 53 points in 32 games in the U18 AAA Tier One Elite League. That same year, he earned a scholarship to Michigan Tech (Phantoms’ Head Coach Brad Patterson’s alma mater) and also became the second overall pick in the USHL Phase II Draft in May 2016. Last year, in his first USHL season with the Buccaneers, Parrottino had 11 goals and 20 points in 45 regular season games.
In order to acquire Parrottino, the Phantoms sent returning forward Nicolas Werbik to the Buccaneers. Werbik was the Phantoms’ leading scorer last season with 18 goals and 39 points. Werbik recently attended the New York Rangers’ NHL Rookie Camp and last season was named to the USHL Top Prospects Game in Sioux Falls back in January.
“Moving Nicolas was not something that we wanted to do, but as they say - to get something you have to give something up. In this case, we have a large number of talented centremen, right shot forwards, twenty year olds, as well as import status players which have some roster restrictions on them…this put us in a tough spot,” said Koehler. “With that said, Nicolas is going to Des Moines to play a top line centre role on a good Des Moines team coached by former NHL and pro hockey head coach Dave Allison. We know Nicolas will have success there and Dave will treat him right, plus Nicolas is looking to play a high level of pro hockey after this season and those doors will be wide open for him with a great season under Dave and his connections. We wish Nicolas the best of luck in Des Moines and we truly appreciate his time and effort with us while he was in Youngstown as he was a great teammate and human being to all the staff members and players associated with our club.”
The Phantoms open up the USHL regular season this Saturday, October 7th at 7:05pm against the Central Illinois Flying Aces (formerly the Bloomington Thunder) at the Covelli Centre.
