KUNTAR'S HAT TRICK NOT ENOUGH ON FRIDAY, CASSIDY AND SMEKNOV SAVE THE DAY ON SATURDAY

LINCOLN 5, PHANTOMS 3

Trevor Kuntar netted a hat trick for Youngstown, but the Stars used three power play goals and edged the Phantoms 5-3 on Friday night. Kuntar scored one goal in the first and two in the second as each of his tallies brought the Phantoms even with Lincoln, but Youngstown never led in the game. The Stars were able to keep the Phantoms off the scoresheet in the third period and used an early power play goal from Brock Bremer to take a 4-3 lead at 2:42 and added an empty net goal in the final minute to seal the victory.

In another tight game, Youngstown got a goal in the last minute of the third period from Matthew Cassidy to tie the game at 3-3 and force overtime and an eventual shootout. The Phantoms scored the only goal of the shootout to escape Nebraska with a 4-3 win Saturday night and snap their three-game losing streak. Kuntar scored his fourth goal of the weekend in the first period, tying the game at 1-1. Cassidy gave Youngstown their first lead of the weekend at 2:10 of the second period. A pair of power play goals from the Stars in the third period put Lincoln in front, but those merely served to set the stage for Cassidy’s heroics. Arseni Smeknov scored a highlight reel goal as the third shooter for the Phantoms in the shootout, and Dominic Basse made the save on the Stars’ final shooter to preserve the win.
