YOUNGSTOWN – Five alumni of the Youngstown Phantoms have been selected as nominees for the 2017 Hobey Baker Memorial Award.
Phantoms alumni in the running for the award as follows: Cam Brown, University of Maine (Phantoms 2012-2013); Austin Cangelosi, Boston College (Phantoms 2011-2013); Maxim Letunov, University of Connecticut (Phantoms 2013-2015); Kiefer Sherwood, Miami University (Phantoms 2013-2015); and Tyler Sheehy, University of Minnesota (Phantoms 2014-15).
The nominations were based on the top three players selected by the Sports Information Directors from Division 1 colleges and universities, according to HobeyBaker.com.
“The United States Hockey League and the Youngstown Phantoms place a great emphasis on moving players to the next level of Division 1 Collegiate Hockey,” said General Manager Jason Koehler. “It’s always gratifying to see our alumni nominated for highly-regarded awards after leaving our organization.”
Sixty-five percent of current Phantoms are committed to Division 1 schools including Harvard, Yale, Boston College, Ohio State University, Michigan State, and many more.
