YOUNGSTOWN, OH – The Youngstown Phantoms have announced two separate trades, acquiring forward Matthew Barnaby Jr. from the Chicago Steel and goaltender Vincent Purpura from the Omaha Lancers.
Forward Matthew Barnaby Jr. is in his third year of junior hockey, playing the previous two seasons with the Pembroke Lumber Kings of the CCHL. In his two years with the Lumber Kings, Barnaby had an offensive line of 16-33-49 in 58 games and last season broke out with a 32-44-76 line in 62 games. The 6’2 163 lb. right shot forward hails from Buffalo, NY and is committed to Penn State University for the fall of 2019. Barnaby was selected by the Chicago Steel in last May’s USHL Phase II Draft in the 3rd round (39th overall). Barnaby had played 12 games with the Steel this season prior to the trade and had a 1-5-6 line with his previous club. Barnaby previously played for Avon Old Farms Prep in Connecticut and also with the Buffalo Regals AAA program.
The Phantoms received Matthew Barnaby Jr. and a 2019 Phase II 10th round draft pick from Chicago in exchange for a 2019 Phase II 2nd round draft pick and a conditional 2020 Phase I 5th round draft pick.
Vincent Purpura is originally from Lemont, Illinois and is also in his third year of junior hockey. Purpura began his junior hockey career with the Johnstown Tomahawks of the NAHL in 2016-2107 before being acquired early in the 2017-2018 season by the Omaha Lancers. Purpura, who stands 6’6 194 lbs., backstopped the Lancers last season to a 13-4-1-2 record in 23 games played with a 2.40 GAA and .916 save percentage. This season with the Lancers prior to the Youngstown trade – Purpura carries a 2-4-0-1 record in 8 games played with a 3.71 GAA and .868 save percentage. Purpura is committed to Boston University for the fall of 2019 and previously played AAA hockey in the Chicago area with the Chicago Fury of the Tier One Elite AAA Hockey League.
To complete the trade with Omaha, the Phantoms have sent a 2019 Phase II 4th round pick for Purpura.
“In the last few days we have been able to negotiate and acquire what we feel are two great players and human beings to add to our team and locker room,” said Phantoms’ General Manager Jason Koehler. “Mathew Barnaby Jr. has really come on the last two years while playing in the CCHL and can be viewed as a late bloomer….we feel he has the ability to provide another offensive weapon to our group of forwards who are developing and coming along as the season progresses. We feel he is in the mold of some other successful Phantom forwards the last two years like Matthew DeMelis (Northeastern and a current Phantom), Matthew Barry (Holy Cross), and Tommy Parrottino (Michigan Tech). With Vincent Purpura – we acquire a goaltender who has a few years of junior experience and success and had a breakout season last year in Omaha after joining their club from Johnstown and the NAHL…Purpura was stellar with the Lancers last season and earned himself a college commitment from a top college hockey program and generated a ton of NHL interest last year as well. We are hoping that a change of scenery for him generates positive results like some of our other ex- Chicago area USHL players over the last two seasons like Joe Abate (Nebraska-Omaha and a current Phantom), Michael Joyaux (Western Michigan), and Nick Cardelli (Bemidji State).”
