YOUNGSTOWN, OH— A one sided affair at the Covelli Centre in Youngstown, OH saw the Youngstown Phantoms (10-10-0-3) fall to the Chicago Steel for their 10th regulation loss of the season.
The game began where Friday night’s win left off as Craig Needham hit the post 30 seconds into the first period. While killing a Trevor Kuntar high sticking call, Jon Mor (16 saves) made a diving stick save to keep the game scoreless. It wasn’t until 5:11 of the first period where Brett Murray tipped one past Reilly Herbst on a Connor MacEachern point shot. Then it was all Chicago from there. Nick Abruzzese netted a top shelf shot past Mor at 6:13 and Gunnarwolfe Fontaine would give Chicago a 2-1 lead after one period.
Josh Groll would notch one at 4:45 of the second period, followed by Travis Treloar 3 minutes and 25 seconds later to give Chicago a 4-1 lead. Adam Robbins added one more at 10:40 to create a 4-goal deficit for the Phantoms.
Brad Patterson decided to make a change and gave Christian Stoever (14 saves) a shot to help turn the tide for the Phantoms. It only took 1 minute and 6 seconds after the change for the Phantoms to respond as Kuntar ripped one past Herbst with a slot shot. But that’s as close as the Phantoms would get.
Owen Power would extend the lead to 6-2 at 14:43 of the second period and Neil Shea would add another with nine seconds left in the second.
The Phantoms were unable to get their offense going in the third period and the Steel would skate away winners in the second game of the three-in-three.
Youngstown returns to action Sunday afternoon at the Covelli Centre for the rubber match of the 3-game series. Puck drop is scheduled for 5 PM with special promotion Holiday Night. This is the final game before the Phantoms head into the Holiday break. Broadcasts for Sunday’s game are on HockeyTV and Western Reserve Radio.
